Controller – Real Estate Developer
A boutique New York City based real estate development firm is seeking a Controller to oversee accounting and financial reporting across its growing portfolio of residential development projects in Brooklyn.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee all accounting operations across development projects and corporate entities
- Ensure financial reporting is prepared in accordance with GAAP
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes
- Maintain the general ledger, chart of accounts, and accounting policies
- Oversee accounting for ground-up development projects, including construction draws and capital tracking
- Monitor development budgets, job cost reports, and variance analysis
- Track project-level cash flow and ensure accurate capitalization of development costs
- Prepare financial packages and compliance reporting for construction lenders and capital partners
- Manage construction loan draw submissions and supporting documentation
- Assist with investor reporting, capital account tracking, and distribution calculations
- Assist ownership with project financial analysis and development feasibility
- Monitor project performance versus pro forma assumptions
- Support cash flow forecasting across active development projects
- Implement and improve accounting systems, controls, and reporting processes
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and legal counsel
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of accounting experience within real estate development, construction, or property management
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and real estate accounting principles
- Experience with development accounting, job costing, and construction loan draws
- Proficiency in QuickBooks and Excel
- Comfortable working in a hands-on, entrepreneurial company environment
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
