Director of Accounting


The Director of Accounting oversees financial accounting, internal and external reporting, and tax compliance. This role ensures regulatory compliance, strong internal controls, and effective financial operations. Reporting to the VP of Accounting, the Director leads teams in Job Cost, General Ledger, and Tax to drive financial accuracy and business partnership.


Responsibilities:


Accounting Operations & Reporting

  • Manage accounting processes, financial controls, and external audits.
  • Ensure accurate financial statements and executive reporting.
  • Maintain and improve accounting systems.


Controls & Compliance

  • Oversee internal controls and risk management.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate external audits and implement corrective actions.


Tax Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws.
  • Manage tax planning and state registrations.


Process Improvement & Change Management

  • Drive continuous improvement and technology adoption.
  • Engage stakeholders in process transformation.


Mergers & Acquisitions

  • Support due diligence, financial integration, and reporting.
  • Validate purchase price settlements and working capital accuracy.


Stakeholder Management

  • Collaborate with finance leaders and external partners (banks, auditors, insurers).
  • Provide strategic financial insights.


Team Leadership

  • Develop and mentor accounting staff.
  • Implement process efficiencies and performance metrics.
  • Ensure compliance with HR and employment policies.


Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s in Accounting; CPA required (Master’s or MBA a plus).
  • 8+ years of public or public/private accounting experience.
  • Capital project accounting experience is required; construction industry experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of percentage of completion accounting is required
  • Basic understanding of construction ERP software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
