Director of Property Accounting - Multifamily
Rapidly growing Chicago-based multifamily property management firm is seeking a Director of Property Accounting to oversee all aspects of property accounting, ensure compliance with financial regulations, and provide strategic financial insights to support growth objectives.
Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management:
- Lead and mentor the property accounting team, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, receivable, general ledger, and financial reporting.
- Manage and coordinate relationships with outsourced accounting staff and vendors, ensuring alignment with company standards and objectives.
- Supervise bookkeepers and senior portfolio accountants, providing guidance and support to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
Financial Reporting:
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for multiple properties.
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting to senior management and stakeholders.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Collaborate with property management teams to develop annual budgets and financial forecasts.
- Monitor financial performance against budgets and provide variance analysis.
Compliance, Auditing & Process Establishment:
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, local regulations, and company policies.
- Coordinate external audits, manage relationships with auditors, and implement recommendations to improve processes.
- Establish and document strong accounting processes and internal controls to enhance operational efficiency and reduce risk.
- Conduct regular internal audits to ensure adherence to established processes and identify areas for improvement.
Process Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process efficiencies and implement best practices in property accounting.
- Leverage technology and business intelligence tools to enhance accounting functions and reporting capabilities.
Strategic Planning:
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to support strategic initiatives and investment decisions.
- Utilize business intelligence acumen to analyze data trends, inform decision-making, and drive overall financial performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align financial strategies with business objectives.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
- 7+ years of property accounting experience, with a focus on the multifamily sector.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
- Proven leadership and team management skills.
- Experience managing outsourced staff and collaborating effectively with third-party service providers.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing bookkeepers and senior portfolio accountants.
- Demonstrated business intelligence acumen, with proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel; experience with property management software is a plus.
