Controller
Seattle-based real estate investment and development firm is seeking a Controller to join its growing team. This position is responsible for managing accounting operations of the organization as well as providing leadership and oversight of a small team. You will have an opportunity to work directly with the executive team and report to the Director of Finance.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Director of Finance in the planning and coordination of all accounting functions
  • Create and/or maintain a control system over accounting transactions
  • Ensure that the accounting filing system is accurately maintained and kept organized
  • Assist in the hiring, training, and mentoring of capable accounting staff as needed
  • Effectively manage the accountants on the team and hold them accountable for completing their assigned duties and following procedures
  • Demonstrate the ability to understand financial goals and do what is required to attain them
  • Review journal entries, accruals, and adjustments and oversee the preparation and submission of monthly, quarterly and/or annual financial statements for owners, investors, and/or lenders
  • Evaluate weekly cash analysis and review loan draws to determine payment of invoices
  • Monitor bank account activity and verify that bank reconciliations are completed properly
  • Ensure that payments for debt services, utilities, and other date sensitive items are processed on time by third party property management staff and in-house accountants
  • Assist Executive Leadership with cashflow forecasts and with the completion of annual budgets
  • Gather, organize, review, and submit lender required paperwork for periodic audits as well as the necessary information to outside CPA firm for timely tax return filings
  • Work with Executive Leadership to analyze and revise departmental policies and procedures

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required
  • CPA preferred but not required
  • 7+ years of professional experience as an accountant in real estate and/or property management
  • 5+ years of experience managing an accounting team and leading training/meetings
  • Strong technical and practical understanding of GAAP
  • Experience overseeing internal/external audits and coordinating tax return filings by outside CPA
  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks, familiarity with other ERP systems and adept at learning new technology
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with a focus on Excel
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Highly organized and strong attention to detail

  • Proven leadership skills with a strong work ethic
  • Team player with a strong sense of personal accountability, responsibility, and integrity
  • A self-starter with the ability to identify areas of need and the drive to take initiative
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision and willingness to roll up sleeves to deal with complex issues
