Assistant Controller – Development & Construction


Rapidly growing multifamily & affordable housing developer is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Assistant Controller to join its accounting and finance team. This role will support the financial management of real estate development and construction projects, with a focus on affordable housing. The ideal candidate will ensure accurate financial reporting, manage project accounting, and support the successful closing and conversion of projects from development through stabilization.


Responsibilities:


  • Support development projects through due diligence, financial analysis, and insurance documentation tracking
  • Review and prepare monthly construction draw packages and closing draws
  • Set up new projects in the RealPage ERP system
  • Prepare cost certifications and place-in-service (PIS) entries
  • Lead efforts to convert construction loans to permanent financing
  • Track and collect capital contributions from partners and investors
  • Ensure compliance with Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) regulations
  • Provide timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
  • Assist with invoice coding, job cost reconciliation, and audit preparation
  • Maintain insurance documentation for all development projects
  • Train and support accounting staff
  • Respond to stakeholder and auditor requests as needed


Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 4+ years of accounting experience within real estate development; public accounting experience is preferred
  • CPA a plus
  • Strong understanding of construction/development accounting and job cost tracking
  • Experience with ERP systems (RealPage preferred)
  • Familiarity with LIHTC regulations and affordable housing compliance
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently
