Assistant Controller – Development & Construction
Rapidly growing multifamily & affordable housing developer is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Assistant Controller to join its accounting and finance team. This role will support the financial management of real estate development and construction projects, with a focus on affordable housing. The ideal candidate will ensure accurate financial reporting, manage project accounting, and support the successful closing and conversion of projects from development through stabilization.
Responsibilities:
- Support development projects through due diligence, financial analysis, and insurance documentation tracking
- Review and prepare monthly construction draw packages and closing draws
- Set up new projects in the RealPage ERP system
- Prepare cost certifications and place-in-service (PIS) entries
- Lead efforts to convert construction loans to permanent financing
- Track and collect capital contributions from partners and investors
- Ensure compliance with Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) regulations
- Provide timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
- Assist with invoice coding, job cost reconciliation, and audit preparation
- Maintain insurance documentation for all development projects
- Train and support accounting staff
- Respond to stakeholder and auditor requests as needed
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 4+ years of accounting experience within real estate development; public accounting experience is preferred
- CPA a plus
- Strong understanding of construction/development accounting and job cost tracking
- Experience with ERP systems (RealPage preferred)
- Familiarity with LIHTC regulations and affordable housing compliance
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently
